Berberis thunbergii - Japanese Barberry
Leaves - Alternate, simple, very unequal obovate to spatulate-oblong, 2/5 to 1 1/5 inches long, obtuse, rarely acute, narrowed at base into petiole 1/12 to 2/5 inches long, quite entire, bright green above, glaucescent beneath.
Buds - Small, ovoid, solitary, sessile, about 6-pointed scale borne on spurs.
Stem - Single spine (usually).
Fruit - Bright red berry.
