Chaenomeles speciosa - Common Flowering Quince
Leaves - Alternate, simple, ovate to oblong, 1 to 3 inches, sharply ovate, glabrous, bronzy red color as leaves unfold and then dark green color.
Stem - Stipules present at base of leaf petiole, stem often smooth or slightly pubescent.
Growth Habit - 6 to 10 inches in height, and spread about the same with tangled and dense twiggy mass of more or less spring branches.
Flower - Scarlet to red varying to pink to white, mid to late April before the leaves and borne on old wood.
Fruit - Pome, 2 to 2½ inches long and wide, yellowish-green ripening in October.
