Leaves - Opposite, simple, entire 2-5 inches long, ovate to broad-ovate, apex taper pointed, base square across, rounded or almost heart-shaped; hairless.
Buds - Twin terminal buds, scaly.
Flowers - Lilac in color, very fragrant, mid-May to late May in dense pyramidal clusters up to 10 inches long.
Fruit - Smooth 5/8 inch long, beaked dehiscent capsule.
