The Watrous Valley Ranch is a working horse and cattle ranch located in
Watrous, New Mexico comprised of the parts of the original New Mexico
land grant given to Samuel Watrous and partners. The ranch currently
encompasses five miles of Mora River frontage and 40,000 acres of land that
has sustained cattle and horses in the valley since the 1830’s. The Phillips
Ranch, which is now
part of the Watrous
Valley ranch, was
founded in 1959.
A traditional cattle
ranch with large
open range pastures,
it has operated as a
commercial cattle
operation since
the days of Samuel
Watrous.
One of the
previous owners, the
Shoemakers, raised
purebred Palomino
horses that were some of the original foundation bloodlines for today’s
quarter horses. Watrous Valley Ranch breeds and trains good, well-broke
ranch horses. Our bloodlines include cutters, reiners, working cowhorses
and ranch horse winners. We breed for color, strength, quickness, and
above all, a good mind. Watrous Valley Ranch owns, shows, and breeds
Blue Savanah Holli (Buddy), our 2002 award winning homozygous black
stallion by multi-million dollar producer Mecom Blue. Most of our mares
are bred to “Buddy” and because he is homozygous, will produce only
black or black point foals - never a sorrel or chestnut. “Buddy” also passes
on his excellent mind and disposition for which he is known. Barret and
Michelle Yates manage the horse program and are well qualified at caring
for, training and showing our performance horses and our general ranch
remuda. We pride ourselves on horses with good conformation, great
minds and dispositions, regardless of the tasks they perform.
